Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms

Enrichment Through Collaboration
Summer is a magical time in the life of a young person, an opportunity for freedom and exploration that marks a child’s growth from one year to the next. We believe that during this time, every kid should have a chance to leave the confines of the city and experience camp.
Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms (SCHF), set on 100 beautiful acres in the Catskill Mountains, was created in 2010. Its founders, Eric Komoroff, Dr. Joshua Borkin and Steve Kessner envisioned a place that would empower young people from underserved communities to make the most of this extraordinary time in their lives and realize their potential through a unique camp experience.
Campers get an opportunity to step outside of their city lives for a few weeks to experience healthy living, environmental stewardship, and team building and leadership development. Whether cooking nutritious meals, caring for animals on the farm, or working as a group on a challenging ropes course, each activity at Steve’s Camp is designed to support campers in discovering “the real me” and in making choices that will have a positive lifestyle impact upon their return to the city. Campers come away with a newfound awareness of themselves, their peers, and the world that exists beyond their block—all the things they need to build sustainable lives and become the vibrant young leaders the world so desperately needs.
Thus far, Steve’s Camp has hosted over 170 New York City teens. By aligning aspects of the camp’s programming with the DOE’s life sciences curricula, our campers are able to reinforce their studies and gain a hands-on understanding of various eco-systems. If, for instance, they are learning about the biology of freshwater fish, we center activities around our two trout ponds. If they are learning about how the human body takes in nutrition, campers can spend time at local farms to learn about organic food production and the impact of a healthy diet.
A majority of camp counselors and administrators are CofU staff of YELC Masters, many of whom graduated from the campers’ current schools. With this shared connection, the staff serve as healthy role models for campers, imparting their leadership skills, life skills and experiences with a keen awareness and understanding of our campers’ backgrounds.
